Nice effort-though I'm really not so happy about Eckford being derived from "Oak ford".
George Black's "Surnames of Scotland" mentions a Alexander de Hecford witnessing a charter in 1206 re the Abbey of Kelso. Could it be that the name was introduced with the ruling Norman/Flemish overlords. This name form occurs elsewhere-in Shropshire/Salop-now defunct, Essex and Bedfordshire.

Thank you for putting this website together. My Eckford ancestors were Thomas Robson (son of William Robson and Agnes Hewie) and Jane Clark (son of James Clark and Margaret Balmer), who emigrated to Canada in 1831 with 5 of their 7 children. I plan to vists Eckford on my next trp to Scotland, and your site is a very good introduction to the area.

A very interesting website, it would be good if more information could be obtained about ancestors of eckford as we believe that ours had a sawmill in eckford and were landowners there. We seem to keep hearing about other surname families living there, but what about the Eckford's who lived there?

Wonderful site and have really enjoyed reading a more personal history of Eckford. I descend from James Patterson and Susan Tait of Eckford who lived at Blinkbonny farm and he worked as a hind at the Caverton Mill. Many thanks to the website manager for all the help she has given and offered

Really nice website. Informative and interesting, thanks. I have Eckford ancestors. Mine were the Rutherford's that lived at Eckford Cottage.

Very good website. I lived at Mosstower from 1959-1970 and at Eckfordhall from 1970-1978. My father worked at Mosstower from 1958-1987 under Andrew Stark then Will Fleming and then under the present farmer Brian Fleming. Keep up the good work.
